There is Something Special Happening on Desiard Street
If you have not driven through downtown Monroe lately, put it on your weekend list. The shop fronts are coming back to life, locally owned businesses are filling in the gaps, and there is a genuine energy building on Desiard Street that feels like the beginning of something really exciting for this city.
Right in the middle of all of it sits The Hawthorne at 231 Desiard Street, and honestly, it stopped us in our tracks the moment we walked through the door.
As event planners and designers, we are always on the lookout for spaces that do not just host an event but actually tell a story. The Hawthorne does both, and then some.
Before It Was a Wedding Venue, It Was Already Part of Monroe's Story
Here is the part that genuinely gave us chills when we started digging into the history of this building.
The space that is now The Hawthorne once housed Honest John's Furniture Store, a cornerstone of downtown Monroe's retail boom from the 1930s through the mid-20th century. Generations of North Louisiana families walked through these exact doors to furnish their homes, their first apartments, their newlywed living rooms. The name said it all — trust, community, and local ownership at a time when that meant everything. The store left such a lasting mark on this city that a Monroe residential subdivision is still officially recorded in the Ouachita Parish Clerk of Court as the "Honest John's Addition."
Next door at 233 Desiard, the Miro Hotel once occupied the upper floors of the building tucked between the F.W. Woolworth Co. and Morgan & Lindsey storefronts. Its projecting sign hung out over the sidewalk on one of the busiest blocks in downtown Monroe while travelers passing through North Louisiana slept one floor above the street-level buzz below. And the retail space directly beneath that Miro Hotel entrance? That is where Swayze's store operated, which is why longtime Monroe residents will tell you this whole block is woven together in their memories like one long, connected story.
Today, 231 Desiard sits steps from the historic Palace Department Store building and Art Alley, and opens its doors every month for the Downtown Gallery Crawl. The exposed brick and antique bones of the original building are still very much present inside The Hawthorne. Which means when you host your wedding here, you are standing in the same space where Monroe families built their homes and their lives for nearly a century. That is not something you can manufacture. That is just real.

We recently spent time at The Hawthorne with owner Megan, and we are genuinely excited to share our honest planner's perspective on this space because it deserves more than a pretty Instagram caption.
Megan has done an extraordinary job bringing rich, intentional design into this downtown gem and the result is something that feels truly one of a kind for North Louisiana.
Art Deco nods Intimate Design
The gold pressed-tin ceilings catch the light in a way that makes you stop mid-sentence and just look up. The exposed brick gives the space warmth and texture that no painted wall can replicate. The custom alligator-skin paneling and deep jewel tones bring in a sophisticated, moody Art Deco energy that photographs in a way most venues in this market simply cannot compete with. And the layout? It is a clean, open historic shell that acts as a gorgeous blank canvas, which for a design-forward planner is basically the best possible starting point.

We look at every venue through a logistical lens because a space can be breathtaking and still give you a headache on your wedding day if the flow is not right. Here is what we would tell any couple considering The Hawthorne:
Keep your guest count intentional.
This is a venue that rewards an intimate, curated guest list. We recommend staying at 80 guests or fewer for a seated ceremony and reception, or up to 100 for a cocktail-style event. Keeping the count in that range means the architectural details can actually breathe, your guests have room to move and connect, and the room never feels squeezed. Some of the most beautiful weddings we have ever planned were under 80 people, and a space like this one is exactly why.
Lean into custom rentals.
Because The Hawthorne is a true blank canvas, it is the perfect playground for bespoke design. Bring in custom lounge furniture, a designed bar setup, upgraded tabletop rentals, lush greenery or dramatic florals. The bones of the room are so strong that almost anything you layer on top of them will photograph beautifully.
Plan your catering logistics early.
The Hawthorne has a great prep space for professional warming, which makes it ideal for high-end drop-off catering, curated grazing tables, or staffed food stations. Because full on-site cooking is not suited to this particular kitchen setup, having a planner who understands how to coordinate catering flow in this kind of space is genuinely important. It is the kind of thing that is invisible when it goes right and very noticeable when it does not.
